Candy tree!

I mentioned this site to a friend tonight and decided to cruise it myself quick.  I realized that I had not posted pictures of my candy tree!  I did indeed make it, it took A LOT of work and I got lots of positive feedback.  I was even voted as the show favourite by the public which makes me heart very happy.  I also wanted to share that my waterfall was stolen.  The garden space that was bombed is frequented by vagrants trying to hide from the elements.  I imagine that one of them has a super stylin blanket/cape/tent now!  The musings that make me giggle the most are someone using it as a cape, it is 8ft long and 3-4 ft wide - so luxurious! I do have some yarnbombing plans for the near future, I am bursting with ideas that need to be twisted and knotted in to beautiful objects.  Take care!

First Yarn Bomb

My first real yarn bombing opportunity has come to fruition! I came across the idea of yarn bombing from a poster for this event.  It was at the Regina public library in the garden.  I made this great big cascading waterfall in a week and installed it last night. (It is 8 feet long ish and 3-4 feet wide) Other bombers made the pool at the bottom and added the fish.  It was a really wonderful opportunity.  I thought I would take a day off after I put this up, however as soon as I got home last night I started planning my next move in Cathedral village. I have some personal projects I want to do up first but I am definitely daydreaming about a candyland tree.  I will keep you posted!

Tags complete, and why green ghost?

My graffiti has not gone up yet because I had not been able to get to a crafty section to buy some foam to write my web address on.  Todays awesome accomplishment! I have whipped up several green ghosts with my lovely blog address to spread  bright green yarn bomb awareness.

Why the green ghost?  I chose the green ghost because green has been my ultimate colour ever since I could pick one by myself. The ghost part comes in for two reasons.  Firstly I have a really, really crazy ghost fetish.  I would have ghosts up and out all over my house all year round if it would not end with my son being taken away.  Ghosts are just so darn cute! Secondly all the things that I have made and put a ghost on for example a scarf get amazingly positive feedback, so fingers crossed for the positive feedback.

I am going to the first of two yarn bombing nights at the Dunlop Art Gallery tomorrow.  I will keep you posted on all the crochety goodness.

A crochety bio

My son's turtle blanket.  Same pattern as the crazy cupcake turtles from high school.
I want to share with you a brief crochety history. I started crocheting when I was really little. I am the oldest of four and was really excited when I convinced my mom to spend one on one time with me to teach me. We didn't realize at that moment but since I sat across from her instead of beside her I mirrored her resulting in my being a left handed crocheter. She taught me to chain, double crochet and single crochet. After that I just stared at the things she made and figured out for myself how to do things like increase and decrease etc. I was much more interested in making clothes for my toys rather than playing with them, or making bags or anything a little girl can think up as useful.

When I was in highschool I made my first afghan. Over the summer holidays I had an incredibly bad eye infection so I could not work. I stayed home and listened to movies and made a crazy, cupcake coloured, turtle explosion blanket to match a friend's homemade pajama pants. This was pivotal because I finally learned how to read a pattern at this point, and discovered I can crochet by feel, not by sight! Three cheers for when I get older.

The next real crochet highlights happened after I met my husband. I made the sweater that I wore to our outdoor december wedding, it is gorgeous and has a train. That Christmas he was joking around that I should make him a scarf and mittens. I asked "what colours?" he responded with "black, purple and orange." Yes. Black, purple and orange. He was kidding. I didn't know that. We didn't have a lot of money so I snuck away on the bus when he was not looking to get the yarn and I made him a scarf and mittens in secret. On our first Christmas morning together he opens this gift in front of my family and his face was so awesome it was worth the misunderstanding. He does like them now, but they had to grow on him first! The next Christmas was a flop as well. I made the mistake of making a sweater for my husband .... I collaborated with him, he picked the pattern, the colour and everything. I, uh, modified the pattern because he is really tall and he ended up with a not so romantic looking tunic (which is a super feat to make a sweater that goes almost to the knees of someone who is 6'6") I am still begging him to throw it out.

I have lovingly started to making things for my son. I started making clothes and stopped. I made my first outfit and realized it is a sleeper that only does up around the neck. With all the diaper changing I would do that got discarded fast!! I made him his own turtle blanket in blues and greens as soon as I found out about him and I am sure I am not done experimenting on him.

First graffiti complete :)

I am incredibly inspired by my son's pajama pants. I had originally bought them not just because they are cute, but I was considering using the style to paint his room in. They are covered in little monsters that I decided to crochet to use in my graffiti.  I created my first one last night.  Unfortunately it is too windy to go tagging during the day today.  I am so anxious to get my first piece out there!  It is too windy because I would be taking my son for a stroll with me.  I think he will shape up to be a pretty good look out because he is a flirty, chatty 8 month old.  Perhaps after my husband gets home from work I can sneak away for a bit.  This was a lot of fun to make, and I have a huge resource of crazy yarns in my stash.  I am leaving a green ghost with all of my tags with the address to this blog, I would love people to know what the heck I am doing.  I even hope it will inspire more creative graffiti from others!

A graffiti beginning.

I have just been introduced to the art of yarn bombing.  I was returning library books when I came across a poster for an upcoming yarn bombing event at the central library garden.  It sparked intense excitement because I am extremely interested in the validity of fiber arts and their modern manifestations.  I found out there is a yarn bombing book which I raced out and bought.  I have been day dreaming about various graffiti projects ever since.  A friend told me that the Cathedral Village area in Regina is supposed to be free game in September for yarn bombing so expect pictures of my work soon! I feel that starting at the library and Cathedral Village which are supportive areas is a great intro in to graffiti because I know it will at least last a day!
